1893/94
Wigan play in the Lancashire Club Championship premier tier for the inaugral season. There were three tiers, with the likes of St. Helens, St Helens Recreation and Aspull occupying places in the second tier, and Pemberton in the third. For the season results below, Wigans League position over time is indicated with the result (eg, W - 3rd).
Wigan end up finishing fourth behind Oldham, Swinton and Warrington. Hving played 18 matches in the League, a much changed Wigan outfit without the stalwarts of Ellis Wardle, Billy Atkinson and Ned Bullough Wigan do remarkably well. Richard Seddon, although initially retired, decided to play on and help out the Wiganers when he could under Billy "Smiler" Halliwells captaincy.
It was a breakout season for the young three-quarter backs of Winstanley, Whitehead and Walkden, with Aspull old hand Johnny Roberts donning the cherry and white jersey.
It is to note, that one of Oldhams' two losses for the season came against Wigan.
Thi section will be updated in due course but it was quite a successful season compared to several previous.
However, there was a smell in the air that the Yorkshire and Lancashire County organisations were awakening to Professionalism.
